Travel to the San Francisco Peninsula:
Most Stanford visitors travel through the San Francisco International Airport (SFO). However, the distance from the San Jose International Airport (SJC) is nearly the same, and sometimes flights are cheaper.
Accommodations:
We have arranged for a block of rooms to be held at the Sheraton Palo Alto, only one mile from the meeting site. However, note that hotels near Stanford are not cheap (thank our local high tech industry). You must book by June 22 to get the group rate of $359/night. You can book a room at the Sheraton by:
Don't forget to mention the Stanford Meteor Environment and Effects Workshop to get the group rate.
For the budget-conscious or government travelers who require per diem rates, there are affordable hotels in Redwood City or Sunnyvale, each about 7-10 miles from Stanford. Hotels.com is a great place to search. There are also many Airbnb options nearby.
Other hotels near Stanford:
Local Transportation:
From the airport to the hotel: a taxi from SFO is the easiest route and will take about 30-60 minutes, depending on traffic. The taxi will probably cost $60-80. For the budget-conscious, you can take the Caltrain for $5! But, you have to first take the airport shuttle to the BART station, then take the BART to Millbrae station, then switch to Caltrain from there. It is tedious, but not as difficult as it sounds. Fortunately Google is there to help you out.
From the hotel to Stanford: If you are staying at the Sheraton, or the Hilton next door, transportation is easy: Stanford offers a free shuttle called the Marguerite. The X and Y lines make a loop, in opposite directions, that goes from the Palo Alto Caltrain Station, and right past the Engineering Center on Via Ortega. Alternatively, and more scenically, you can take the P line right to the Stanford Oval and take a beautiful 5-minute walk across campus to the Engineering Quad.
Driving and Parking: if you are driving to campus from a local hotel, you can park in Parking Structure 2 and walk to the Durand Building. Directions to parking and walking to Durand are here.
